François-Nicolas Martinet

François-Nicolas Martinet (c.1731–1800) was a French natural-history artist and engraver best known for his elegant studies of birds. Originally trained as an engineer and draughtsman, he brought exceptional precision to ornithological illustration, carefully observing plumage, posture and proportion. Martinet is especially associated with the bird plates produced for Buffon’s Histoire naturelle, which helped establish his reputation.
