Philip Miller

Philip Miller (1691–1771) was one of the most influential British botanists and horticultural writers of the 18th century. Appointed head gardener of Chelsea Physic Garden in 1722, he held the position for almost fifty years, transforming the Garden into an internationally important centre for the cultivation and study of plants. Miller is best known for The Gardeners Dictionary, first published in 1731, which became one of the most important horticultural reference works of its period. His botanical publications brought together practical horticulture, scientific observation and illustration
