Miller Engravings - Set of 12 Yellow Botanicals (can be split into 6s)

A fine set of twelve 18th-century botanical engravings by Philip Miller, taken from the original German edition of Abbildungen der nützlichsten, schönsten und seltensten Pflanzen welche in seinem Gärtner-Lexicon vorkommen, published in Nürnberg between 1768 and 1782.

Philip Miller was a Scottish botanist and author who became head gardener of the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1722. Under his stewardship, the garden developed one of the most important plant collections in Europe, and Miller gained an international reputation for both his horticultural expertise and botanical knowledge.

His work also contributed significantly to the development of modern botany. In 1751, his experiments helped demonstrate the important role played by insects in pollination.

Many of the plates were engraved from drawings by Richard Lancake, Georg Ehret and Johann Weinmann, among the leading botanical artists and engravers of the period. The resulting works combine scientific observation with the refined decorative quality characteristic of 18th-century botanical illustration.

Each engraving is presented in a bespoke frame behind UV70 glass, which helps reduce reflection while offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight.

The complete set comprises twelve engravings, although it can also be divided into sets of six or three. Individual works are available at £375 each. Please contact us for further details.
