Eugen Johann Christoph Esper
Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (1742–1810) was a German naturalist, zoologist and entomologist best known for his pioneering studies of butterflies and moths. A professor at the University of Erlangen, he published the influential Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur, begun in the 1770s. The work combined detailed descriptions with finely engraved plates and became an important contribution to the classification and illustration of European Lepidoptera.
