A fine set of twelve butterfly engravings by Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper, the German naturalist and entomologist whose work became an important contribution to 18th-century natural history.
Esper developed an interest in botany and the natural sciences from an early age and later pursued natural history at university, eventually taking responsibility for the Natural History department at Erlangen. He also assembled an important collection of specimens during his academic career.
Among his most significant publications was Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen, issued between 1777 and 1794. The work became one of the most comprehensive studies of butterflies of its period and is admired for both its scientific importance and the quality of its engraved plates.
These engravings combine detailed observation with strong decorative appeal and form a striking group when displayed together.
