Martinet Birds of Prey - Set of 4

Martinet Birds of Prey - Set of 4

SKU: 00049

A striking set of four hand-coloured copperplate engravings depicting birds of prey, from Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in Paris by the Imprimerie Royale between 1770 and 1786 for Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon.

The engravings are by François-Nicolas Martinet (1725–1804), one of the foremost bird artists and engravers of the 18th century and an artist to the French Court. His ornithological work is admired for its elegant composition, fine detail and careful observation of individual species.

This set is particularly impressive as a group, with the four birds of prey creating a strong decorative statement while retaining the historical and scientific interest associated with Martinet’s work.

Each engraving is presented in a complementary frame with AR70 glass, which offers a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight while reducing reflection and allowing the colour and detail of the images to remain vivid.
