Martinet Birds - Set of 6
A fine set of six hand-coloured copperplate bird engravings from Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in Paris by the Imprimerie Royale between 1770 and 1786 for Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The engravings are by François-Nicolas Martinet (1725–1804), one of the foremost bird artists and engravers of the 18th century and an artist to the French Court. Martinet’s ornithological work is admired for its elegant composition, careful observation and finely rendered plumage, giving the plates both scientific interest and strong decorative appeal. Each engraving is presented in a bespoke bamboo frame with a tonal mount and UV70 glass, which helps reduce reflection while offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight.
