Martinet Parrots - Set of 9
A fine set of nine hand-coloured copperplate bird engravings from Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in Paris by the Imprimerie Royale between 1770 and 1786.
The engravings are by François-Nicolas Martinet (1725–1804), one of the foremost bird artists and engravers of the 18th century and an artist to the French Court.
The series was produced for Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), one of the most influential naturalists of his age. As director of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, Buffon played a major role in the development of natural history during the 18th century.
His monumental Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière was published between 1749 and 1788 in 36 volumes. Martinet created the bird illustrations for the work, which were also issued separately in Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux.
These engravings combine scientific observation with strong decorative appeal and form an impressive group when displayed together.
Each engraving is presented in a complementary gold bamboo frame behind AR70 glass, which helps reduce reflection while offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight.
