Martinet Birds - Set of 2
A beautiful pair of hand-coloured copperplate bird engravings from Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in Paris by the Imprimerie Royale between 1770 and 1786 for Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon.
The engravings are by François-Nicolas Martinet (1725–1804), one of the foremost bird artists and engravers of the 18th century and an artist to the French Court. His ornithological work is admired for its elegance, accuracy and fine decorative detail.
Each engraving is presented in a bespoke bamboo frame with a tonal mount and UV70 glass, offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight while also reducing reflection and allowing the colour and detail of the images to remain vivid.
