Weinmann Thistles - Set of 6
A fine set of six botanical engravings depicting different varieties of thistle by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, from the rare first edition of Phytanthoza Iconographia. The work was pioneering in its use of the colour-printed mezzotint process, which was then retouched with transparent or opaque watercolour. This innovative technique allowed for subtle tonal variation, fine botanical detail and a richness of colour that distinguished Weinmann’s plates from many other botanical publications of the period. These thistle studies combine scientific observation with strong decorative appeal, making the group particularly striking when displayed together. Each engraving is presented in a bespoke frame behind UV70 glass, which helps reduce reflection while offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light.
