Besler Copperplate Engraving
A beautiful engraving of pomegranate, apricot and plum from the celebrated botanical work Hortus Eystettensis, published in 1613 by Basilius Besler.
Besler was born in Nuremberg in 1561. he was pharmacist with a keen interest in botany. He was also the curator of the Einstatt Garden belonging to the Bishop of Einsatt. Under the Bishop's patronage, he produced the monumental work Hortus Eystettensis is regarded as one of the great landmarks of early botanical illustration. It was published in 1613. Besler spent 16 years working on the illustrations , supervising a team of engravers in the process. The inspiration for the engravings was taken from the Bishop's remarkable garden and they are highly prized for their scale, clarity and extraordinary decorative quality.
This example brings together three fruiting subjects in a particularly striking composition and is presented in a bespoke frame behind UV70 glass, offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight while also reducing reflection so the detail and colour can be appreciated clearly.
