Loudon Botanicals - Set of 9
A fine set of hand-coloured botanical plates by Jane Webb Loudon, dating from the 1840s. LOudon was a pioneeringVictorian author and artist who revolutionised botanical illustraion. Her stunning hand coloured lithographs are famous for introducing a highly atistic approach - instead of drawing isolated specimens for scientists , she composed vibrant mixed arrangements showing how flowers would look clumped together in a garden. These illustrations were originally published in her book series designed to make gardening accessible to women.
Loudon was one of the most influential popularisers of gardening and botanical illustration in Victorian Britain. Her beautifully observed plant studies are admired for their clarity, elegance and decorative appeal.
These examples retain strong, delicate colour and are presented in bespoke gold bamboo frames behind UV70 glass, which helps reduce reflection and offers a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight.
