Curtis Botanical Engravings 1777 - Set of 9
A fine and exceptionally rare set of nine hand-coloured botanical engravings from Flora Londinensis, published by William Curtis in 1777.
Only around 300 copies of the work were issued, making surviving examples particularly scarce. The publication documented the wild plants found in London and the surrounding area during the 18th century and is now regarded as an important record of British botanical history.
The hand-coloured copperplate engravings were produced by leading botanical artists of the period, including James Sowerby, Sydenham Edwards and William Kilburn. Their plates combine close scientific observation with the refined decorative quality associated with the finest botanical illustration of the era.
Each engraving is presented in a bespoke frame behind UV70 glass, which helps reduce reflection while offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of ultraviolet light.
