Flower Engravings by P.Bessa - Set of 8
A set of eight extremely fine hand coloured engravings from:
- Flore des Jardiniers, Amateurs et Manufacturiers
- Paris: Audot, 1836
Pancrace Bessa was an outstanding pupil of Redoute and in the employ of the Duchess of Berry as painter of natural history subjects.
In the legend one can see the scientific and French names of the depicted plant. The name of the artist, "P. Bessa Pinx" is always on the left side. The name of the engraver is on the right side and varies from engraving to engraving. The natural habitat of the plant and when it blooms is shown on the lowest left line. Sometimes the various anatomical details are named on the right lower area.
