Bessa Botanicals - Set of 6 in white frames
A superb set of six finely hand-coloured botanical engravings from Flore des Jardiniers, Amateurs et Manufacturiers, published in Paris by Audot in 1836.
The works are by Pancrace Bessa, an accomplished pupil of Pierre-Joseph Redouté and a highly regarded painter of natural history subjects. Bessa was employed by the Duchess of Berry and became known for botanical illustrations of exceptional delicacy, accuracy and decorative quality.
Each engraving includes the scientific and French names of the plant within the legend. Bessa’s signature, “P. Bessa Pinx.”, appears to the left, while the engraver’s name appears to the right and varies between plates. Additional notes identify the plant’s natural habitat and flowering period, with some plates also including anatomical details.
The hand-colouring is particularly fine, with a softness and depth that gives the engravings an almost watercolour-like quality.
Presented in bespoke frames behind UV70 glass, which helps reduce reflection while offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight.
