Edwards 18th Century Kingfishers - Set of 4
A rare and striking set of four hand-coloured kingfisher engravings by George Edwards and Seligmann, dating from 1749–1776.
George Edwards (1694 - 1773)was an english naturalist and ornithologist known as "the father of British ornithology ".his major work published in 4 volumes between 1743 and 1751 was " A Natural History of Uncommon Birds". his drawings were precise and beautifully hand coloured. Johann Michael Seligmann re-engraved and published German and Dutch editions of Edwards' work between 1749 and 1776, which are also highly sought after.
The engravings combine the meticulous observation of early ornithological illustration with a rich decorative quality, making the group particularly appealing both to collectors and as a coordinated set for display.
Each engraving is presented in a bespoke black and gold bamboo frame with a double mount and UV70 glass, offering a degree of protection from the damaging effects of sunlight while also reducing reflection and allowing the colour and fine detail of the images to remain vivid.
